Melbourne F1 bound

20120313-233413.jpg

Ok Racers,

The time has FINALLY arrived. I’m hopping on a plane in about 9 hours to head to Melbourne for the opener of the 2012 Formula 1 season at the Qantas Australian Grand Prix.

Excited? YES!!!

I, of course, went all out and am lucky enough to be enjoying a pitlane walk and pitlane breakfast on Thursday. Autographs with the drivers and numerous other incredible experiences INCLUDING attending a very special cocktail party with Mark Webber as the special guest.

He will be mingling, answering fan/supporter club member questions and enjoying the F1 atmosphere at the Crown Casino.

I’ll be sure to get lots of photos, one or two with Mark and plenty of track action.

I’ll be walking the track on Sunday before the race too.

Be sure to check in and see where I’m at!

Set your alarms for qualifying & race and keep the revs high.

The season has begun!

Go Webber 🙂

Torro Rosso unveil the STR7

Torro Rosso launch the STR7

Hi Racers,

Talk about a great couple of days! For all of the F1 fans out there who have been waiting eagerly for some F1 related action, its come in a flurry with the unveiling of most of the teams cars and the testing starting in Jerez.

Torro Rosso unveiled their 2012 Challenger, the STR7 on Tuesday ( apologies for the delay in getting this post out to you all )

Stepped Nose on STR7

The Torro Rosso ( unsurprisingly ) featured the stepped nose, which, frankly to me is now old news. It’s obvious that the teams are employing this as a way to achieve the lost downforce from the blown diffuser ban. The fact Mclaren are the only team WITHOUT a step nose could either go in their favour or very much AGAINST. Only time will tell.

Here are the STR7’s Tech Spec’s thanks to http://www.scuderiatororosso.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/Article/STR7-Fact-File-021243159270264

Force India unveil VJM05

Hulkenberg & di Resta unveil the Force India VJM05

Hi Racers,

Another one on the grid for 2012.

Force India have unveiled their VJM05 in Silverstone on Friday.

As usual, we have the stepped nose ( I think its pretty obvious this is a trend – like it or not ). I don’t mind this cars overall look, but the sponsorship is a bit outlandish. Having words stuck to the edge of the car so obviously is a bit of a shame, but, has to be done I guess.

Here are the technical specs, thanks to http://f1pulse.com/schumster/insights/201202033/force-india-vjm05

Ferrari unveil the F2012

Alonso & Massa unveil the new Ferrari F2012

Hi Racers,

The unveiling of the Formula 1 team’s 2012 challengers is in full swing, with another few teams unveiling their cars over the past week.

Ferrari have unveiled their F2012, and have already been on the back foot with feedback of the “ugly” variety. It’s obvious that this year, with the new stepped nose that it will be difficult to find a car that people find as attractive as last year. Mclaren, have however managed this with their new release.

Ferrari F2012 Profile - Stepped Nose Included

One big thing missing from the new F2012 is the Italian flag on the back wing 😦 It has been replaced with sponsorship, which is a shame, as it is something that many fans have, I’m sure, grown to love.

The new wing design. No more flag

Bruno Senna Confirmed for Williams in 2012

Its official. Another Senna for Williams. Congratulations to Bruno Senna

Hi Racers

Finally! Its official. Bruno Senna has been confirmed to be racing for Williams, after signing an initial year contract with the iconic team that his uncle, Ayrton Senna was a driver.

In the official statement at williamsf1.com Senna adds:

“I feel very privileged that Williams has selected me as one of their race drivers. The team has a great heritage and I hope I can help write a good chapter in their history. The evaluation process has been intense and methodical but the time I have spent in the factory has demonstrated that the team has great people and all the resources needed to achieve better things this season”

Ayrton driving for Williams. Brazil 1994

“It will be very interesting to drive for a team that my uncle has driven for, particularly as quite a few of the people here actually worked with Ayrton. Hopefully we can bring back some memories and create some great new ones too. I also want to get some good results in return for the support my country has given me to help get me to this position today. I am very proud to be Brazilian and more motivated than ever to demonstrate what I can do. Ever since I first sat in a go-kart I never wanted to do anything else.”

For many fans of the Senna name, this is a really exciting time. Senna proved himself as a stable rookie in the 2011 season, and I am glad he has secured himself a place in the 2012 grid.

You can follow Bruno on twitter: @BSenna

After Williams lost their 4.5M Euro sponsorship deal with T&T, they needed a high sponsorship driver to fill the void. Senna certainly does that, bringing with him almost 14 Million Euro in Brazilian Sponsorship with him to the team.

However, Senna himself will only be earning around 200-250,000 EURO for his year of driving this year. That is a guess, using Maldonardo, his team mate as a comparison (200K EURO)  and also what he was being paid at HRT (150K EURO). As long as he is on the up and up, thats all he can ask for, yes?

There is, however, an element of sadness to see Rubens Barichello go. After 19 years racing in Formula 1, we are losing an iconic name from the track. Many are already hoping that Rubens continues to be a name in F1, with suggestions of pit lane reports, or even a commentating role in the future. Whatever happens for him, I wish him all the best.

Now, there is only one grid position left for 2012 for HRT. Lets hope it isn’t much longer?

On another note – Red Bull have officially announced that their challenger Formula 1 car for the 2012 season will be released on 6th Feb… Keep your eyes peeled!
